As parents and caregivers, our reaction to noticing stress or anxiety in our children is to fix it for them. A hug, a reassuring word and often times a redirect of positive reinforcement can often be the solution they need to a worrisome situation. But, what if we aren't able to be there in the moment? Whether it's minutes before a big test or team tryout, a public speaking project or presenting at their science fair - there are many times throughout the day where your child must learn to self-regulate their emotions and calm themselves. But how? And will they be too apprehensive because they don't want to draw attention to themselves in front of their friends doing some "weird yoga breathing thing"? We have good news - all you need are 2 hands! Using the exercise attached, your child can count their breath in and out as they trace their fingers. Too little to count yet? No worries! Just simply breathe in and out while slowly tracing each finger and it will work just as well. It's a fantastic way to control breath to control emotions in a quiet and quick manner without anyone even knowing. Better yet, share it with a friend or two and practice together!
